Appearance, dimensions

In Latin, the name of the species looks like this - Platycercus icterotis. The subspecies Platycercus icterotis xanthogenys is also distinguished, which has only visual differences. The typical subspecies has a characteristic yellow color on the cheeks. On the back, green plumage with black blotches prevails.

In males, the breast is bright red, while in females it is a paler shade. In general, the amount of red in the plumage of males is much higher than that of females. The tail is mostly dark green with blue patches. The eye color is dark brown. In chicks, before reaching the age of one year, there is no yellow color on the cheeks. And the color is dominated by green with an olive tint and orange-red feathers in the frontal part.

The subspecies Platycercus icterotis xanthogenys at a young age is almost indistinguishable from the typical one. Females also have no characteristic differences. For an adult, the size is typical in the range of 25-26 centimeters, including the tail. This makes the yellow-cheeked rosella the smallest species in the genus. The weight of a sexually mature bird can reach 80 grams.

Home content

This type of parrot is very popular with birdwatchers and breeders due to its unpretentiousness and relatively small size. It is important to note that the yellow-cheeked rosella is the best bred member of the genus in captivity. In general, parrots are easy to tame and are also renowned for their peacefulness. Adds "bonuses" a pleasant voice similar to the sound of a flute.

In the diet for this species, it is better to use mixtures of various seeds: canary grass, millet, buckwheat, oats, etc. Also, the diet requires green dandelion leaves, various types of lettuce, etc. Also, the diet of the yellow-cheeked rosella should include fruits. For example, bananas, apples, pomegranates, oranges.

Lifestyle in nature

The main habitat of both subspecies of the yellow-cheeked rosella is the southwestern part of the coast of Australia, as well as the islands adjacent to the mainland. Often referred to pests by local farmers, due to flock attacks on crops and garden lands. The number of birds in the wild is not known for certain. Due to its undemanding habitat, this species of parrots is found everywhere in this region, from eucalyptus forests to city parks.

The yellow-cheeked rosella prefers to keep in pairs or small groups. Large flocks form only in places where the food supply is sufficient for the comfortable life of large groups. The parrot feeds on insects, plant seeds, berries, fruits, flowers and nectar.

During the mating season, which lasts from August to December, the female lays about 5-8 eggs. The incubation period lasts about 20 days. The final formation of plumage in chicks is completed by 12 months.

Nobody calls the wren. How Belarusians talked to birds by phone: important statistics

Last spring, "Ahova Ptushak Batskaoshchyny" and people from the "Creaton" initiative came up with an interesting toy - to call the birds. A1 gladly supported the idea and provided ten birds with numbers. Since then, the subscribers of this operator, having dialed a certain number (free of charge, if not in roaming), can listen to the gray owl, chaffinch, bullfinch and other Belarusian birds. This unprecedented service is still working, and on the first day of spring, the company counted who they call more often. And who is in ignore.

A1 says that no other operator in the world has such a thing. For 9 months the birds were called 183,285 times. Most often, people wanted to hear the nightingale - almost 37 thousand calls. Also, many began to find out how the gray owl "speaks" (and who it is in general) - 26 thousand calls. The tree thrush is among the three leaders - almost 20 thousand.

Least often "communicated" with wren. You can correct this right now by calling +375 44 500-66-19, he will also send a text message later.

Not only Belarusians liked the fun. During the first months of the performance of the numbers, they wanted to hear Belarusian birds in Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, the USA and other countries (but here it is already paid).

How does the warbler sing: chiffchaff, willow warbler, rattle, green?

In the forests of Ryazan, 4 types of warblers live: willow, rattle, chiffchaff, green. All the chiffchaffs sing beautifully and melodiously.

Each of the species is distinguished by its own unique song. The chiffchaff melody resembles the sound of a drop. The ratchet warbler combines a perky crackle and a lingering sad whistle in its song. The green warbler sings loudly and brightly with iridescent trills. The Willow's song is loud, but pleasant and gentle, a little sad.

Extinct 136 thousand years ago, the bird species revived in the Seychelles

Scientists have discovered a bird that became extinct 136,000 years ago. Cuvier's shepherd is a species of terrestrial birds that disappeared from our planet 136 thousand years ago, revived again and at the same time in their former form, scientists at the University of Portsmouth and the Museum of Natural History (Great Britain) report.

It is specified that this species of birds in ancient times lived on the territory of the Aldabra Atoll, which is part of the Seychelles. However, after the attol went under the water, the shepherd cuvier disappeared from the surface of the Earth.

About 100 thousand years ago, Aldabra reappeared above the water, and recently a shepherd cuvier was again seen on it. Scientists compared the remains of birds found before and after the flooding of the atoll, and it turned out that they belong to the same species. Each time after disappearing, the shepherd again flew from Madagascar, after which he lost the ability to fly. This is possible thanks to iterative evolution, "the study authors explained.
